I used this book to emphasize the point that you should always be yourself. At the end, it was asked to draw an ocean and it felt natural to the Blue crayon because that was it’s true self. They felt if they kept helping him that he would eventually start turning the “correct” color. They felt they knew what was best for the Blue crayon. The Blue crayon, labeled, Red, was being directed what to do by it’s teachers, friends, and family. In the book, “Red: A Crayon’s Story,” decision making was being used by everyone in the story but the Blue crayon (labeled Red) itself. Judging a book by a cover, a crayon on its wrapper….look deeper for true beauty! We can decide to teach or children and students, that an appearance is just skin deep, it is the inside that truly makes a person wonderful. When we decide to look past what we see on the outside of an individual, whether it be a peer, a student, a parent, whomever, and actually look at who they truly are inside and what they are made of and how they make the world better, that is when we have decided to choose kindness and love. It took was when Berry asked him to draw the blue ocean for her boat, that he was finally about to unleash what was really inside him and for him to realize, I’m BLUE!!!īerry making the decision to see past the Red label, and see what was truly inside, a beautiful blue, made the world of difference for red, his peers, his parents, and the teacher. Red knew that something was different about him, not wrong with him, just different. We sway them to be what they “should” be or “could” be, and dismiss what they are actually feeling or have a desire to be. We often times do the same thing with our children and students. He was doing things that he felt were the things he should be doing, to be like the other crayons, or what red should be.

The decision for “Red” to continue to try and be red was a major undertaking for him.
